The plant covers an area of 55 hectares (approx. 133 acres), and boasts an outstanding infrastructure. Production started at the end of 1973. Our commitment to continuous improvement has allowed AOS to increase the nominal production capacity of 600,000 to over 1 million metric tons of alumina per year by enhancing processes and the infrastructure.

A cross-sectional study of employees at three alumina refineries in Western Australia in 1995/1996 investigated respiratory symptoms and lung function in relation to bauxite dust, alumina dust, and caustic mist exposures. 21, 22 After adjusting for age, smoking, and atopy, most groups of production workers reported a greater prevalence of work
Fig. 2.2 shows that the production of alumina is a complex chemical process. The alu-mina content of bauxite ores varies from one deposit to another, and methods of treat-ment differ accordingly (see 16.1.2). This means that each alumina plant is almost tailor-made to suit a particular bauxite. The processes are nevertheless basically similar

By 1952, this technology was realized on an industrial scale at the restored Volkhov aluminum smelter. A process flowsheet for alumina production using nepheline ore is shown in Figure 1. The maximum annual output of alumina was 53,000 tonnes. One year later, the Tikhvin alumina plant began production anew, with a capacity of 50,000 t/y.

Bauxite consumption per ton of alumina has increased in recent years (from around 2.7 tons in 2005) due to declining quality of bauxite resources and now three tons of bauxite are required to produce one ton of alumina and two tons of alumina are required for the production of one ton of primary aluminum metal.

Primary aluminum production begins with the mining of bauxite ore, a hydrated oxide of aluminum consisting of 30 to 56 percent alumina (A l2O3) and lesser amounts of iron, silicon, and titanium. The ore is refined into alumina by the Bayer process. The alumina is then shipped to a primary aluminum plant for electrolytic reduction to aluminum.

Though alumina can be produced from bauxite by other chemical processes, the Bayer process is the main industrial route for metallurgical alumina production, as it is the most economical process for purification of bauxite that contains a considerable amount of Fe 2 O 3. Over 95% of the alumina produced globally is derived from bauxite using

Yarwun. Australia. 213. Rusal Aughinish Alumina is the largest alumina refinery in Europe and the largest of the alumina facilities operated by UC RUSAL. The plant was built between 1978 and 1983 and had an initial rated capacity of 800,000 tonnes a year. The current annual capacity of the refinery is in excess of 1.9 million tonnes of alumina.

over 35% of global metallurgical grade alumina production. This update of the Alumina Technology Roadmap has for the first time benefited from collaboration with the Chinese alumina industry. A meeting of the IAI Bauxite & Alumina Committee was held in Zhengzhou, China in April 2010, hosted by Chalco’s Zhengzhou Research Institute.
Bauxite is used to produce alumina, which is then used to produce aluminum. Wastes can be generated at several points in the production process, including during the mining of the bauxite ore, and during the refinery production process. The refinery processes used to produce aluminum generates about 2 – 2.5 tons of solid waste for every 1 ton
The critical foreign exchange-earning bauxite and alumina industry slumped in 2012 after a considerable bounce back in 2011. Alumina production fell by more than 10% when compared to 2012 to just 1.75 Million Metric Tonnes of Alumina, after producing 1.96 Million Metric Tonnes in 2011.
